‘The Man Who Walked Between The Towers’ 9/11 Literature Unit

9/11

The September 11 terror attacks on America are a difficult subject for teachers to cover, especially for young students. A Caldecott Medal-winning book, however, is giving educators a way to explore those events in a gentle, respectful way.

“The Man Who Walked Between The Towers” by Mordicai Gerstein is a beautifully-illustrated book that tells the fascinating true story of Philippe Petit’s tightrope walk between the twin towers. Through this narrative lens, the story then shifts to the 9/11 attacks, paying respect to those who died without exposing younger readers to the dark horrors of that day.
