As defined by Susan Riley, the STEAM approach to learning utilizes science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics as access points for guiding students’ inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.
There are four educational benefits to using STEAM techniques in the classroom:
- It engages students in the learning process.
- Students stay on-task, which improves classroom behavior.
- It’s inclusive for all types of learners.
- It encourages a fun, learning atmosphere.
STEAM techniques build a team environment by encouraging the following:
- Creativity
- Communication
- Collaboration
- Confidence
- Innovation
- Passion
- Perseverance
- Problem Solving
- Time Management
Setting Up A STEAM Lab
When setting up a STEAM lab, start with identifying a space in the classroom that is accessible to students and allows room for projects. Keeping your tools and supplies organized is important, so consider having bins with labels available. The lab should support your math and science curriculum with manipulatives and task cards.
Our video lists a number of items to consider stocking in your STEAM classroom.
We have listed the items from the video below, with links to purchase them from retailers Dollar Tree and Amazon. Don’t forget, Dollar Tree will ship your items to a location near you for pickup, so you can save on shipping costs!
