McDonald’s is doing a very nice thing – replacing the toys in their Happy Meals with books! The books carry a “Valentine’s Day” theme and they will only be available until February 15! It’s part of a promotion in which McDonald’s is donating thousands of books to the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program for use in schools. The Happy Meals will contain one of four books, including the classic “Paddington” by Michael Bond and illustrated by R. W. Alley. The three other titles all have Valentine’s Day themes: “Clark the Shark Takes Heart” by Bruce Hale and illustrated by Guy Francis; “Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse!” by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond; and “Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day Is Cool” by Kimberly and James Dean. The books are specially made to fit into Happy Meals — they’re petite paperbacks, about 4½ by 5½ inches. Spanish-language versions of the books will be available at some stores.
